Essential to the mission of the Junior League of Miami is empowering women.
Whether it's our own members or the women we serve through our community programs, we achieved this goal last year by:
- Training nearly 1,000 Junior League of Miami Members as community and civic volunteers, and leaders who in turn contribute 3,700 hours of service.
- Educating nearly 200 young women in foster care on financial planning and healthy eating so they can succeed in life.
- Providing supportive housing and resources for more than 70 families at Inn Transition South and Inn Transition North, freeing them from domestic violence.
- Offering nearly 800 nutritious meals to women and children via Junior League of Miami community projects.
JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MIAMI PROJECTS
Junior League of Miami identifies unmet needs in the community and partners with local non-profits to develop unique programs to fulfill those needs, while also providing the resources and volunteers to support those programs. Our three signature projects are Inn Transition North, Inn Transition South, and Done in a Day.
Inn Transition North and Inn Transition South are transitional housing facilities for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence, and Done in a Day allows the Junior League of Miami to provide trained volunteers to one-day events in the community. Junior League of Miami founded and owns Inn Transition North and has provided support and programming for more than 20 years. Through a partnership with Miami-Dade county, Junior League of Miami provides mentoring and life-skills training for residents and their families, along with a safe place to live so they can break the cycle of violence.
Additionally, the Junior League of Miami provides funding and volunteers to additional community projects on a yearly basis. Projects have included the Miami Science Museum, Therapy Dogs, Breakthrough Miami, and Lotus House.
Break the Cycle
Inn Transition North and Inn Transition South
Junior League of Miami founded Inn Transition North in 1990 and has provided over $650,000 of financial support and more than 3,700 volunteer hours. Over this period, more than 400 families have directly benefited from the safe, secure, and supportive environment offered at Inn Transition North. Operated in partnership with Miami-Dade County, Inn Transition North and Inn Transition South are integral components of the continuum of care necessary to break the cycle of domestic violence.
Our partners say:
"Inn Transition South operates at its optimum due to the ongoing support of the Junior League of Miami. The support is provided to complement the social services and self-sufficiency goals associated with transitional housing. I look forward to working with the Junior League of Miami and the beautiful spirits displayed by members as master volunteers! We could not exist without you!" -Joyce Henry Victim of Crime Act Supervisor, INN Transition South
Breakthrough Miami provides an eight-year academic enrichment program to help highly motivated, under-resourced middle and high school students go to college. Through the “College Bound” program, trained Junior League of Miami volunteers develop workshops that prepare students for applying to, preparing for, and attending college.
Our partners say:
“The Junior League of Miami’s innovative workshops at Breakthrough Miami College Bound are a perfect complement to our proven program. JLM provides our students with valuable experiential learning that develops life skills and fosters lasting relationships with leaders in our community.”
- Elissa Vanaver, CEO, Breakthrough Miami
Junior League of Miami trained volunteers develop and offer monthly employment skills workshops. Topics include resume-writing, interviewing, job hunting, dressing for success, social media training and special instructions for addressing sensitive topics in job applications and interviews. Each workshop also includes a mentoring component which allows participants to receive feedback on mock interviews and presentation skills.
